Businessmen are asking if Trade and Industry Minister Paula Gopee Scoon head is in the clouds when she claimed that Trinidad and Tobago was out of the recession.

Trade and Industry Minister PAULA GOPEE-SCOON

They say that with election coming government ministers will be peddling all kinds of fake news for the electorate to swallow. Gopee-Scoon told members of the T&T Manufacturers Association at their annual general meeting at Hilton Trinidad last week that T&T was out of recession because there was a small growth for 2018 and the Government was hoping to build on that growth this year. But many people are saying that several business places are sending home workers, reducing employee working hours (from 4-5 days), cutting salaries, and asking landlords to reduce their rents. Businessmen are even trying to rearrange loan payments at their banks. Many businessmen are laughing kyah, kyah, kyah over Gopee Scoon’s recession statement. Many people are saying they thought that information about the T&T’s economy would come from the Central Bank and not from the nation’s Minister of Trade & Industry. If it were true, the Central Bank would have reported that the recession in T&T is over a long time now.
