ARC Interim President BASKARAN BASSAWH , ARC Second Vice-President ROBERT BERNARD

The post for President of the Arima Race Club (ARC) is heating up as there are reports that interim President Baskaran Bassawh is likely to get a strong challenge from 2nd vice president Robert Bernard.

Bernard’s post will become vacant as he has already served his two-year term. Jerry Narace will remain as first Vice-President since he has more than a year to go in the post. Three members of the Management Committee - the (“Apache” posse)- Kama Maharaj, Tasram Maharaj, and Nyron Dookeran- will become vacant when the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Club takes place on May 26, 2019, at Level 2 at the Grand Stand at Santa Rosa Park, Arima. Nominations for the various posts were closed on April 16, 2019. Up to press time, it was not known if the three outgoing Management Committee members will be seeking re-election. Many ARC members would be waiting patiently to see if the results will go in favour of Bassawh to be returned as President since reports were circulating that applications were sent out by Basssawh’s office to recruit 50 new members to join the Club so as to be eligible to vote in the election. It is left to be seen how many of those 50 new members will throw their support behind Bassawh. Many of them said they had no interest in the election. Bernard, who is seeking the post, has a wealth of racing experience since he had been on the management of the former Union Park Turf Club (UPTC). A number of ARC members are being lobbied to support Bernard, who is expected to give Bassawh a run for his money, even with at least 30 of the new 50 members coming out to vote. Bassawh, who was first Vice-President took over the post of President following the sudden resignation of Brian Stollmeyer in October last year.
